The Doctors’ Health Advisory Service (DHAS) of Western Australia (WA) has great pleasure in inviting you to join us at the 2019 Australasian Doctors Health Conference (ADHC) in Perth on 22 and 23 November 2019.

The theme is the important topic of “Creating a Healthy Workplace”. This will be relevant to doctors at all stages of their career, from medical students, to doctors in training, to doctors established in their chosen career. A particular focus will be looking at the impact of the work environment on a doctor’s health, be they a solo private practitioner or working in a large tertiary hospital. Issues will include the effect of medical culture on work life balance, bullying and harassment, and physical and mental health problems. The conference will be relevant to all doctors and medical students, and anyone involved in the training or management of doctors.

This will be the 24th annual Australian Doctors in Recovery meeting; a non-profit self-help fellowship of Doctors and Dentists with alcohol and/or substance abuse issues.

The annual meeting has two parts:

  • the Academic Day on Friday 15 March, which is a CPD/CME type day open to anyone with an interest in Doctor’s Health and addiction issues
  • the second part of the weekend will occur over Saturday16 and Sunday 17th March, and only doctors with alcohol/substance issues should register for this part.

These sessions will comprise small group discussions of doctors with these issues, with the theme of this year being:  “How does being a doctor affect your recovery and how does being in recovery affect the sort of doctor you are?”

Generally there are around 30 registrants from Australia/NZ each year, plus a few from US/UK, many of whom have been sober/clean for over 20 years, so it’s a great opportunity to meet and talk to people who have well established recovery and have returned to work. There is no requirement to be involved with 12-step recovery programs to attend (though most are). We will have one session on what the 12-steps are and how they work. Partners/wives/husbands etc. are welcome to attend the dinners/social events of Friday/Saturday evening.
